Queen’s Quest 2: Stories of Forgotten Past is a Hidden Object video game with a rich story. In it, you take the role of a renowned alchemist as you try to solve a murder mystery and ease the worries of the king.
Along the way, you will explore the dark side of the peaceful kingdom as you unravel conspiracies. Can you help your king?
The game’s art style is deeply rooted in ideas of fairy tales, with magical and whimsical creatures hidden away in every corner you can explore. This does not make it a game for young children however, since it covers some more mature themes.
It is based, like many other works, on the idea of “what if fairy tales were organized in a real kingdom”. Still, it is certainly not a grim or horrific story, and most of it takes place in brightly colored areas filled with intricate details.
The character design is very elaborate, even if they are 2D models. The choice in clothing and apparel really sells their personality, and with everyone being fully voice acted the feeling of immersion is always present. There are some 3D models scattered about the game to add to its flavor, even if they are not overtly shown or taking center stage. For example, in certain areas where your character interacts with something or drinks a potion, you maintain a first person perspective and your arms are shown performing the action; said arms are made in 3D.
At its core, this is a quintessential Hidden Object game, but what sets it apart is its unique presentation. The game revolves around finding a series of objects scattered across various rooms and areas. You're tasked with figuring out where to use these objects or what to combine them with. Sometimes, the game offers you the opportunity to examine certain spaces more closely.
During these instances, you're transported to an intricately detailed screen filled with a multitude of items in free clutter games. Here, you're given a list of specific items that you need to find amidst the chaos. Interestingly, as the storyline progresses, you may find yourself revisiting some of these clutters, but with a new item on your list to find. This adds an intriguing layer of complexity, encouraging you to remember where these scenarios take place in case you need to return later in the game.
The profession of the main character is critical not only for the story but also for the gameplay. You are not a nobody, a newcomer to this world. You are an expert in the alchemical arts, and you have a recipe for every situation, especially when it comes to transformation.
This is when the game’s journal comes into play. You can, of course, use the journal like in many other games; if you left the game for too long and you do not remember what you were doing, or maybe you just need a little nudge in the right way, the journal offers that aid.
However the journal does much more than that, since this is where your character writes the recipes for the different alchemical inventions. Once you encounter a problem, she comes up with a solution, and then you have to go back and find ways to get the ingredients for your alchemical inventions.
As for the story, if you have not played the previous installment then do not worry, it is not required or neither referenced as you start this game. It all starts with a familiar story: A girl in a red hood traverses the woods, only to be stalked and then hunted by a gruesome wolf.
As it seems that she might meet her demise, a mysterious figure wielding an axe slays the wolf where it stands. As the plot continues, you might end up finding out that not everyone is who you think they were in that scene.
As for you, you are an alchemist working on your latest invention: a potion that can turn you into a bird. As you are adding the finishing touches, there is a knock on the door. The King’s messenger hands you a letter detailing that his royal highness has summoned you to his castle.
You soon make your way there with your new flying abilities, and it seems that he needs your advice in a delicate matter: One of his loyal servants, named Wolf, has been murdered and you are tasked to find out what happened. You might already see the connection with the earlier story.
Queen’s Quest 2 is a fantastic adventure filled with magic and intrigue, and it is greatly recommended for fans of the genre looking for something a bit deeper, and for newcomers intrigued by it.
