Gardenscapes Mansion Makeover is a Hidden Object puzzle game with lots of interior design elements. In it, you and your butler must fix and adorn your mansion before your friends arrive for the different celebrations they wish to have there.
The objective of the game is to buy the different upgrades for the mansion so you can ultimately fix it completely. As you choose what to buy, you are given three cosmetical choices that all serve the same purpose. You click on the one you prefer, and it is instantly placed. Each new thing you need unlocks a new scene with the butler where he does something in the mansion or just engages in conversation, with either you or another character.
This game is the direct sequel to Gardenscapes!
The actual meat of the gameplay is how you earn the coins to buy the upgrades. When you press play, you can choose a room within the mansion. Each room starts a stage, where you are treated with a scene filled to the brim with objects of different kinds, and a sidebar of clients that want something from it. When you identify what they want, you click on it and they leave, paying the much needed coins.
You keep this routine until all clients have left, and then reap your rewards. Some clients need more than one object, others might give just a slight clue of what they want.
If it gets too challenging, you can always press the hint button to see exactly what they want so you can find it better. This is recharged by finding question marks all around the levels, and coins can be hidden as well.
If you want to take your time with the game, you can disable the timer by choosing relaxed mode. The difficulty can be changed at any time.
The story is simple and it takes place immediately after the previous game, where you were making over the garden space. You are happily enjoying the fruits of your labor as you marvel at the fountain, its ducks and swans, the marble bridge and the carefully crafted statue.
The place is the talk of the town, and as you check your mail you see that everyone wants to visit it. Your friends want to celebrate weddings, anniversaries, birthdays and baby showers all on the mansion’s grounds. You happily agree, and tell everyone they can come and visit whenever they want.
You might have rushed your response however, since when you open the doors to the mansion… you see it as abandoned as ever. You see, in the game before this one, you only worked on the garden. But the mansion needed work inside of it as well! Now with plenty of holes to fill, furniture to buy and plumbing to fix, you will have to get right to it if you want it all to be ready by the time your friends arrive. Good thing you have your trusted butler at your side to help you plan and execute just how exactly you will manage to do everything.
The game has a lot of style, and a lot of humor. The art and color palette are mostly bright and cheery, but this might not be obvious at first, since the mansion is in complete disrepair. As you muscle through the challenges however, you will be bringing the color and joy back to the place. And then the style will stay consistent all throughout the different rooms.
The game is mostly two dimensional with an isometric view of the manor. Your butler assistant is the only 3D model, who not only assists you in your journey but also interacts with the environment and gives some levity and humor. He looks mostly cartoony and has a friendly manner to the way he handles himself, which makes the game very appealing since he is all over the place. You even get a close up to his model on the score stages, which shows it is more detailed than one might initially think.
Gardenscapes Mansion Makeover is a great continuation of the gameplay and narrative of its previous iteration. It has plenty of charm and humor, but the main feature of the game is how beautiful the place looks by the time you have unlocked every single piece to buy.
